PLACES OF THE HEART

The owl calls into the moon I unlock the door It opens to an ocean view I’ve seen many times before. As we settle in our room Rain starts to pour, And teal green waves pile on the shore. Through morning mist we take the trail Down to the sand. Thread our way through driftwood piles On the border of the land. Reedy grasses ankle high, Kelp on the strand. In cold water barefoot we stand. Places of the heart Memory songs. Pebbles kept in a wooden box Till a new one comes along. Huckleberries on the path A wild turkey track Some twisted pines sculpted by the wind A damp mossy mat. Hidden in between the dunes,  Salt marsh and flat. Maybe we're, maybe we're, maybe never coming back. Places of the heart Songs of the land When it calls into your heart Sing along if you can. Places of the heart. Glimpse of the past. Save the moments when you can. Maybe never coming back.

FLY AWAY

Will I borrow the wings of the gull To leave the storm behind Will they carry me out through the lull In torrent tossing winds? When the hurricane's blowing I'll fly away Buildings imploding I'll fly away Can we still fly away? Will I borrow the cheetah's speed To leave the fires behind? Will I run past the flaming weeds Escape the searing heat? When the wildfires start burning I'll run away Smoke churning I'll run away Can we still run away? Fly away,  Run away, Leave behind our troubles Hope to live another day… Broken down by disaster We fly away To recover We run away Can we still fly away.

WINDS OF THE ISLAND

Lights of the city People to see Caught in the webbing Of where I must be. Longing to leave. Even the forest Rooftop of leaves Trees once familiar  Are strangers to me. Faint memories. Show me your canyons  Your waterfalls, your streams. All painfully remind of the  Home I left behind.. And so I must go Soon as I'm free. Winds of the island  Are calling to me... Over the sea.

FROM TODAY

Dancing at the end of the old year Welcoming the new Lift our clattering heels to tread The pathway clear and true O'er the meadow at the horizon Far as we can see Clear a vision to map the steps To be who we would be. Mist and thunder and Troublesome day Fly away, fly away, Bog and rubble and Chancy terrain Fly away away. Not to say that we never will fall From today, from today Sun and showers and dancing and song From today today.

I Wanna Fly Away, by Tod Stillwell

Such a joy to work on this song with Tod.  He did the writing and all the instruments, and I sang the vocals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQIE5Lh0rKk

WE DON'T AGREE

WE DON'T AGREE Karen Lewis We don't agree You want the bounty of this land I want to heal it You want to grow in strength I want to seek The strength within We don't agree How can we heal this rift between us By calling names To weaken each other By gathering others to our side So you can see We don't agree Go deeper Deep beneath the home's foundation  Is the earth Deep beneath the clothes and the bangles Lies the heart Deep beneath the surfaces Where we all want to live Where we all want to grow Where we all want to love And be free.

WHALE SONG

WHALE SONG Karen Lewis Big, grooved, and black, They come from the north Twelve thousand humpacks Are seen from these [hores To the tropical playground  And whale nursery They come for the winter to Hawa-eeeee! Ooooo, Eeeeeee Is this the yodel of the sea? Or are they just singing, "We are free."? Snorkelers don't see them, But do not despair. We listen to choirs of whale song out there. With head under water And fins in the air, Come hear the whales in Hawa-eeee! Ooooo,  Eeeeeee Is this the yodel of the sea? Or are they just singing,"We are free."? What's there to sing about Under the sea? The planktonic krill, such a delicacy! Or maybe they sing to their sweethearts to be. "Come swim with me in Hawa-eeee!" Ooooo,  Eeeeeee Is this the yodel of the sea? Or are they just singing to be free.

CATCH

CATCH Karen Lewis Catch the wind in your sail Pick up the gale and ride it. Into the sun. Don't look back at your wake. Leave the churning behind you. Just carry on. In the past were beaches  Golden halcyon reaches To stroll upon. Once you lost all your treasure Failure by your own measure Everything gone. Catch the wave when it comes Lead the crest and ride it. Under the sun. Don't look back at mistakes Leave every tumble behind you. Your moment has come. All the deep preparation Practice and repetition  For learning how. Every stance you have tried or Balanced strength you applied will Flow to you now Catch the wind in your sail Pick up the gale and ride it. Catch the wave when it comes Lead the crest and ride it.

FAVORITE CLOTHES (or THE TRAGEDY OF THE CLOSET)

FAVORITE CLOTHES or THE TRAGEDY OF THE CLOSET Karen Lewis My favorite clothes are faded and tattered My favorite clothes are falling apart. I can either dress to look and feel happy, Or I can wear new, just to look smart. Gossamer and lace, seed beads and bows. Well-polished slippers, I'm light on my toes.

SINGING INTO THE WINND

SINGING INTO THE WIND  Karen Lewis CHORUS I've been singing into the wind Writing on shifting sand. Got a whole lotta words want to pour out from me Never to be heard again. I'm singing into the wind Writing on shifting sand. Nothing is indelible. Here, then gone again. V1 Mountain jays keep hiding nuts They cannot find to claim. Sand crab has to sweep the sand  From his burrow after every wave. And all the work to build a nest  Is nothing I would crave. When wind and rains come pounding Nothing will remain. CHORUS We're all singing into the wind Writing on shifting sand. Got a whole lotta words want to pour out from me Never to be heard again. I'm singing into the wind Writing on shifting sand. Nothing is indelible Here, then gone again. V2 Takes a lot of rain to raise The level of the sea. Takes a lot of time to grow  The tall sequoia tree. And though the lyric tune I play Is only a soft melody... Each voice adds a whisper To the song of humanity. CHORUS And I'm s...

GENTLE PARENT SPIRIT

Where is my mother? Where is the hand to wipe my tears? To calm my fears? Where is my father? Where is the voice to help me stay strong As I go along? If I could Think of the faces That smiled on me to lift me up. Cheer me on. Then I could keep on trying till the dawn. But I'll need All the kindness I can find for myself Forgive myself... It's time to  Say all the things that I wish Someone had said In a gentle parent spirit. I am my own mother I sing myself to sleep at night So everything's all right. I am my own father.  I keep a strong roof over my head. So I'm safe in bed.  I am a child  Growing changing learning how to be Perfectly me. And looking to the best that I can be. And you'll need All the kindness you can find for yourself Forgive yourself, yourself It's time to  Say all the things that you wish  Someone had said  In a gentle parent spirit Into your mind Comes every critical line you've ever heard every biting word Recorded and remembered...

GRANDMOTHER TREE

An ancient tree grows in the wood Her branches crowning the canopy. Her roots dig deep beneath the soil For the water there and her strength. She is the center of the wood. And squirrels and crows chatter in her boughs. Among her roots the fungi grow. With the ants and voles underground. My daughters come not to my side Neither for wisdom nor for company How can I call? They do not hear. They may not come till I am fallen, fallen. The sun shines brightly on her leaves And powers her green chemistry. She knows the rhythm of the breeze And sings the song of the rain. She loses branches to the wind And beetles burrow 'neath her bark. She nurtures seeds against her fall. And scatters them on the ground. Oh Grandmother have I come too late? Your bole is cracked and you are fallen fallen. Whisper to me in this late hour What wisdom have you gathered in your long, long days.

TURNING OF THE YEAR

For the longest night, the stars are all alight And the cold winds cease their blowing. The earth beneath, seems to take a breath, And the clouds return a-snowing. Although we know there's winter yet to go Before spring buds appear. We watch the light grow, from this dark night And gather here for the turning of the year. We scatter seeds for birds beneath the trees And hang a wreath on our door. By the yule log fire we strike up a choir As folks have done before. Although we know there's winter yet to go Before spring buds appear. We watch the light grow, from this dark night And gather here for the turning of the year.

COCONUT MOON

Coconut moon Lights up the skies of June. I'll be singing a tune Beneath the coconut moon. While the zephyr breezes play And the palms begin to sway Along the tropical lagoon. Tangerine sun Smiles on everyone. Sailboat of fun Beneath the tangerine sun. Oh the sand between my toes  And the wave that comes and goes Will keep the blues on the run. Blow the conch horn  When the sun goes down. A clam castanet band Captures the sound. Leave the fish tacos and the shave ice stand... And watch the mooon...... Coconut moon Lights up the skies of June. I'll be playing a tune Beneath the coconut moon. While the zephyr breezes play And the palms begin to sway Along the tropical lagoon. Beneath the coconut moon.
