LONG-FORGOTTEN HILLS

LONG-FORGOTTEN HILLS

Karen Lewis

On the winding road

You are here beside me

 Here to hold my hand

Through all of life's turnings.

We have travelled far

On this road together.

We have made a life entwined.

Heart to heart and mind to mind.

You gave me constant love

I gave you spirited children.

You gave me boats so we could

Travel together.

You gave me dahlias, I

Captured them in paint.

All the gifts have come and gone.

As our lives have moved along.

Look well, go slowly

Through the long-forgotten hills....

If we could return to the start of the road,

No doubt in my mind...

I'd choose you every time.

Can we leave the home

Where we raised our children?

Leave the porch where they carved their initials.

Leave the handprint plates?

Maybe keep the teapot?

Leave the children's beds and toys

Only save remembered joys.

Look well, go slowly

Through the long-forgotten hills....

If we could return to the start of the road,

(The hills and the valleys of our journey together)

No doubt in my mind...

I'd choose you every time.
