LITTLE CREATURES
LITTLE CREATURES
Karen Lewis
Salamanders curl in the deep damp duff
Where neither cold nor heat can reach.
In the deep forest gloaming The little creatures hide,
Building up the forest so the Earth can breathe.
Caterpillars chew the green canopy,
Food for the birds in the trees.
Ant workers dig in the bite of wood,
Building nests for the colony.
Wild bees hover in their honey dance
Pollinating flowers ‘neath the trees.
Earthworms wriggle through the forest floor
Churning the debris into soil.
Hoverflies hang in the sunlight streaks
Waiting for their mates to see.
Spider spinners stand in their webs of silk
Dewdrops bejewelling the strings.
